Real career opportunities for disadvantaged young people

Together with the JOBLINGE initiative, thyssenkrupp Materials Services is working to combat youth unemployment and the shortage of skilled workers.

There are around 260,000 unfilled apprenticeship positions in Germany and about 180,000 people still looking for an apprenticeship. That doesn't add up. Some of those who are still looking for an apprenticeship experience multiple disadvantages because of their social or migration background. At the same time, the risk of a shortage of skilled workers is increasing. thyssenkrupp Materials Services wants to be part of the solution and, together with the JOBLINGE initiative, ensure equal opportunities for people entering the workforce.

Everyone deserves a chance to participate in the labor market. In a society based on respect and dignity, treating people without prejudice must be a matter of course. For us, the cooperation with JOBLINGE is an important part of the social responsibility that we are pursuing as part of our 'BEYOND' sustainability strategy.

Together with its partners from the volunteer, public and private sectors, the JOBLINGE initiative supports disadvantaged young people between the ages of 15 and 27. JOBLINGE has the know-how to place people in jobs and thyssenkrupp Materials Services provides time and financial resources as well as internships and apprenticeships.

Eight thyssenkrupp Materials Services employees have so far volunteered to take part in the JOBLINGE mentoring program, each supporting a mentee for four to six months. The volunteers offer guidance and share tips from their own professional experience.

HR experts from thyssenkrupp Materials Services support the organization with application days and training sessions organized by JOBLINGE. As part of the cooperation, the young adults also get an insight into the working world of a corporate group during open house days at thyssenkrupp Materials Services.

How does "JOBLINGE" work?

The aim of the initiative is to refer young adults who are receiving assistance from job centers and employment agencies to the JOBLINGE organization and help them to get ready for the primary labor market. During the program, which lasts up to six months, the young people are optimally prepared for an apprenticeship. In group projects, the participants acquire important vocational skills, work together to develop their strengths and find suitable jobs. In the next step, they can find out which apprenticeship suits them best, for example by completing their first internships.

From the start of the program, this path is accompanied by one-on-one mentoring. People with professional experience act as mentors and offer support in the search for an apprenticeship. With success: as a rule, eight out of ten participants in the program sign a training contract.
