thyssenkrupp supplies components for building LNG tanks

In recent years, there has been a continuous rise in the consumption of liquefied or liquid gas and along with it demand for modern ways and means of storing this precious commodity. One option is the use of liquid natural gas (LNG) tanks. thyssenkrupp has now developed a method by which manufacturers can more easily assemble these gigantic structures. "Together with thyssenkrupp Steel Europe, we've been looking for possibilities of offering potential partners a holistic solution," explains Julia Eschenbruch, Services team at thyssenkrupp Schulte.

No sooner said than done! While the steel specialists in Duisburg were busy producing the plate their counterparts at the Business Area Materials Services were developing a logistics strategy to allow the customer to fully concentrate on their core business. "We take over a whole spectrum of functions from storage management via materials processing to just-in-time delivery. In this way, we're offering our customers added value" says Maximilian Schefz, Services Marketing Manager.

One such major customer specializing in the power sector has awarded thyssenkrupp the second contract to deliver the materials for building two new LNG tanks and to take over large parts of the supply chain. Altogether 4,000 tons of steel plate are being processed to customer specifications and shipped out to the customer. One such tank can hold around 160,000 cubic meters of gas.

"We're pleased that the lengthy preparations have paid," says Eschenbruch. Almost a year was spent by the Project Manager and her team together with Dr. Pfeifer from thyssenkrupp Steel Europe and a team from thyssenkrupp Steel North America in close discussions with the customer in order to take down all the requirements and map out an individual solution. "As the project progressed we realized the importance of togetherness at thyssenkrupp since only by working together as a team from various Business Areas (Steel and Services) did we succeed in clinching the contract," explains Eschenbruch.
