thyssenkrupp opens up ideas for careers on “Logistics Day”: vocational students explore thyssenkrupp logistics center

On Thursday, April 27 vocational students in Dortmund were given totally new insights into the world of logistics. As part of “Logistics Day”, Marcus Raback, general plant manager, took 47 youngsters on an exclusive guided tour of thyssenkrupp’s Dortmund Logistics Center (LC) to find out more about the career opportunities available. “The young people are amazed at the sophisticated supply chain that ensures goods get from A to B safely and on time,” says Raback.

Particularly impressive are the capacities of the site: LC Dortmund is the world’s biggest central warehouse for stainless steel and nonferrous metals. “These are all new dimensions. I am really fascinated by all the necessary processes”, says Dennis Jakobi, a logistics apprentice at a furniture store. Around 20,000 tons of material is stored on an area the size of more than 32 football pitches. Every day over 2,500 orders are delivered to destinations throughout Europe. And more than 30 machines are on hand to process, cut and prepare the heavyweight materials in line with customer specifications.

Career opportunities at global company

“We attach great importance to developing new talent and for this reason we are also involved in Girls Day and Boys Day which are held in parallel with Logistics Day,” says Stefanie Zähler, head of apprenticeship training at LC Dortmund. These initiatives were launched by the federal ministries of education and family affairs to give school students an insight into careers in which girls and boys are underrepresented. As part of this, six youngsters became interns for the day in Dortmund, getting to know the wide range of occupations at the logistics center. Sarah Nies, 13 years old, could see herself working in the logistics sector: “We had a really interesting time here. It is an all new experience to gain such detailed insight into this job.”

LC Dortmund is part of thyssenkrupp Schulte, Germanys leading material service provider for steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous metals. thyssenkrupp Schulte serves mainly customers from industry, crafts and construction.
