Improving the environmental situation: thyssenkrupp puts new firing hoods into operation at the steel mill Duisburg-Beeckerwerth
thyssenkrupp MillServices & Systems, a company of the Materials Services business area, has further optimized the recycling processes at the oxygen steel mill 2 in Duisburg-Beeckerwerth. As a result, the experts for steel mill-related services have commenced operation of two modern firing hoods, and will be responsible for the crushing of steel production surplus during the next ten years.
Dust and fume extraction
A firing hood is a covered, sealed fire place. Underneath, large-volume steel scrap is crushed. The employees are outside the hoods and are thus protected. The new firing hoods at the thyssenkrupp Steel site are equipped with a modern exhaust air purification system. Hundreds of filter tubes ensure that no dust enters the environment. "With this system, we make a significant contribution to environmental protection", says Michael Löcken, Head of Melting Plant of steel mill 2 at thyssenkrupp Steel Europe. "This is particularly beneficial for the neighborhood of our location.”
Machine processes up to 30,000 tonnes of steel scrap a month
"We are delighted that we have been able to succeed against the competition and to optimize recycling in Duisburg for the upcoming years", explains Klaus Winters, division manager of thyssenkrupp MillServices & Systems at Duisburg-Beeckerwerth. Each month, up to 30,000 tonnes of high-quality metal will be crushed and fed back into production. The decisive factor for the contract with thyssenkrupp MillServices & Systems was the sustainable concept and the know-how in the field of occupational safety. "With our modern burners, we meet all environmental requirements and guarantee a high operational safety",says Winters. Overall, around 35 employees work at the two new firing hoods.
