Our Strategy "Materials as a Service"

Or how we turn materials into a service.

In an increasingly unpredictable world where resources are becoming scarcer, demand and supply chains need to be managed as proactively, efficiently and resiliently as possible. Against this background, we at thyssenkrupp Materials Services are shaping the materials business of the future.

Martin Stillger, CEO thyssenkrupp Materials Services

thyssenkrupp Materials Services is the largest mill-independent materials distributor and service provider in the Western world. There is hardly anything in our everyday lives that has not been supplied, processed or moved by Materials Services. With our products and services we ensure that day after day cars can come off the production line, buildings can be built, plants can be manufactured and aircraft can take off. We take on a key position in the economic fabric – and with it a great deal of responsibility.

Our world is changing with great dynamism. Increasing scarcity of resources, the absolute necessity for truly sustainable action, geopolitical areas of tension, advancing digitalization in all areas of life. The framework conditions are becoming increasingly complex – the entire economy is facing a major transformation.

As early as 2019, we launched a far-reaching change process across the company with the aim of shaping our future and that of our industry with vision. We have firmly anchored it in our vision: We want to make our contribution to creating a world in which resources are used in the best possible way – for shared success and a sustainable future.

Since then we have been continuously developing from a classic materials trader into an intelligent, sustainably oriented supply chain manager. From the former supplier of "Materials & Services", we are becoming a company that offers materials as a service – "Materials as a Service".

The materials supply of the future: flexible, resilient, sustainable.

The new approach enables us to adapt agilely to new customer needs. Whether it's nearshoring, the increasing need to relocate value-adding stages back to neighboring countries, the demand for resilient supply chains or the growing demand for demonstrably sustainable products and solutions – with "Materials as a Service" we set the course early on to develop strong yet scalable responses to precisely these new trends. After all, our customers should be able to concentrate on their core business. To do this they need not only the right products and solutions but also the security of their availability. No matter how unpredictable the conditions may be.

Our approach: Systematic and agile.

A key element of our strategy is the intelligent networking of all relevant partners and parameters. At thyssenkrupp Materials Services we have made "Connecting Smarter" our mission: We think and develop new, forward-looking ecosystems to manage even the most complex flows of goods intelligently and conserve resources. Digitization is the operational driver for this, our sustainability claim the driving force.

Every company wants to grow. But a prerequisite for this is a strong performance culture. That's why we are taking a far-sighted approach to optimizing our network of sites in the regions, making our processes more agile, our cost structures more efficient - and empowering our employees. Because change is made by people. Together we are shaping the sustainable and high-performing future of the materials business.
