Sustainability at Materials Services
BEYOND – We think sustainability beyond standards
One of the greatest challenges of our time is the responsible use of the resources available to us. They are limited, unequally distributed and essential for our economy. Sustainable action is therefore indispensable to ensure that future generations will also have a tomorrow worth living. Because from an ecological as well as a social and economic point of view, nothing less than the future of all of us is at stake. For example, every individual will be directly or indirectly affected by climate change.
With around 380 locations in more than 30 countries, as the biggest mill-independent materials trader and service provider in the western world we have a particular responsibility here. That's why we at thyssenkrupp Materials Services are setting a good example. While the European Union has committed to climate neutrality from 2050, we will achieve this goal as early as 2030. To achieve this, we have firmly anchored sustainability in all its facets in our corporate strategy: The Strategy House Vision.
In doing so, our approach goes beyond the internationally recognized ESG standards. With BEYOND we have added points to these guidelines that are of central importance to us and the success of our business. As a market leader in Materials Services we also aim to be a leader in sustainability. With BEYOND clean we are manifesting our commitment to operate on a climate-neutral basis from 2030 and to continuously reduce all forms of environmental pollution. With BEYOND green, we underpin our commitment to decarbonize supply chains and comply with social standards with sustainable products and services. With BEYOND good, we are reinforcing our claim to contribute to greater social justice as a responsible member of the global community.
Our understanding of sustainability
thyssenkrupp Materials Services occupies a key position in the transformation of the economy. From this position we can achieve a great deal and together with our customers, we are shaping the future of the materials supply chain in a sustainable way, among other things. Many aspects of sustainability offer market opportunities which we use to bring about change.
Faster to the target: Our CO2 roadmap
The core element on the road to climate neutrality is a clearly defined timeframe - our CO2 roadmap. We are already achieving our goal 20 years earlier than originally planned because we are relying on a wide range of measures.
We reduce the amount of energy required without imposing restrictions. For example, through the digitalization of supply chains or energy-efficient, sustainable buildings.
We replace components to realize the full potential of energy-saving opportunities. Among other things, by replacing our truck fleet or promoting energy self-sufficiency.
We eliminate components that are incompatible with our goal of climate neutrality. For example, we obtain the energy we need exclusively from renewable sources.
BEYOND - Thinking sustainability further
"We will already be operating on a climate-neutral basis worldwide from 2030 - around 20 years earlier than originally specified. With this decision we are taking responsibility in the fight against climate change and underlining our claim to leadership in the industry. After all, as the biggest mill-independent materials trader and service provider in the Western world, we can make an impact in over 30 countries around the world."
"I believe that rethinking sustainable solutions will change the world as comprehensively as the industrial revolution did. As we move into this new world, transparency and efficiency will become even more important, and so will the digitization of supply chains. We need a good mix of experience and a willingness to question the tried and true in order to be prepared for the challenges of the coming years."
"In my view, an important component is that the basic concept and the goals of our sustainability strategy are supported by the entire workforce. The rethinking has already begun, but we must increasingly question our previous priorities and align our entire value chain accordingly. I think that the transformation we are currently shaping and driving forward is the opportunity of our time."
"As a global company, we are actively committed to a sustainable future in many regions of the world and have anchored this endeavor in our vision. We are working intensively to involve our entire organization in the change process. In doing so, we want to help tackle one of the most important challenges of our time - as a company and also personally."
