Logistics Center Dortmund
World Record for Dortmund
What does Dortmund have to offer apart from its Bundesliga team Borussia, the Dortmunder U arts center and the Westfalenhalle venue? That’s right – a logistics site for stainless steel and nonferrous metals that is unlike almost any other in the world.
The Logistics Center Dortmund is located in the port area close to the stainless steel service center. Situated on a 130,000 m2 site with 50,000 m2 of shop space, it stores more than 20,000 tons of material, making the LC Dortmund the world’s largest central warehouse for stainless steel and nonferrous metals.
The site employs around 320 people, who make sure that the roughly 11,500 long and flat products in stock are delivered just in time. In addition to thyssenkrupp’s own companies, the LC Dortmund serves customers throughout Europe. It boasts an impressive range of machinery: Two plate laser cutters, three sheet metal grinders (grinding, brushing and shrink wrapping), twelve band saws, a production circular saw with integrated order-picking robot, a 3D tube laser cutter and a water jet cutter ensure processing options to the very highest standards. To ensure optimum storage, the LC Dortmund has three Kasto high-bay storage facilities with 4,000 storage cassettes. Around 2,500 items are picked here every day and loaded the same night.
Electronic loading control system prevents loading errors
In addition to an impressive array of machinery, the LC Dortmund also has a sophisticated shipment system. To ensure loading is carried out exactly to schedule, time slots are allocated to all trucks to be loaded. The process is backed up by an electronic loading control system. Prior to loading, all items are checked by the SAP system against the bill of lading, which significantly reduces loading errors.
