thyssenkrupp to supply materials for inland navigation

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia accounts for almost one-half of the goods shipped via inland waterways in Germany. Last year alone, around 127 million tons were hauled along the Ruhr, Rhine, and other rivers. It is particularly such commodities as ores and minerals that are transported by so-called push-barges into the Ruhr District.

For supplying the materials needed to build these cargo vessels, thyssenkrupp has received a follow-up order from Neue Ruhrorter Schiffswerft. Altogether 2,500 tons of rolled steel will be required to build five push-barges operated by this customer. So that the material can be processed immediately on its arrival, thyssenkrupp Schulte, a subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Materials Services, will cut it to size, prime, and modify it to the customer's requirements.

"We make sure that our partners obtain the finest materials for their needs and just in time," explains Dirk Claessens at thyssenkrupp Schulte, in charge of Customer Relations. He adds: "The contracts are very important for us, and they are a great example of intragroup cooperation. We, as logistics experts, ensure that our colleagues at thyssenkrupp Steel Europe obtain the raw materials they need for steel production.

For Claessens and his team, the new order is the continuation of a smoothly functioning partnership. Each year since 2011, they have delivered the semis (steel sheet and plate, bars, sections and pipes) for the construction of these push-barges. "It is great to see that the customer trusts us and wishes to continue our cooperation," says Claessens. In all, Neue Ruhrorter Schiffswerft has awarded orders for almost 25 barges with thyssenkrupp between 2011 and 2017.
